The three main pillars for a greener future are electricity generation systems from renewable energy sources (RES), transmission and distribution networks, and energy storage systems. This was stated by the chairman of the Commission for Energy and Water Regulation (KEVR), Ivan Ivanov, quoted by BTA.
In the past 10 months alone, KEVR has issued licenses for the production of electricity from solar energy for over 1300 megawatts (MW). By the end of 2023, the installed capacity of renewable energy sources in the country was 4300 MW. With this 1300 MW it makes a total of 5600 MW.
Important decisions
According to Ivanov, the data show that RES energy in the country is growing. However, this creates problems because transmission and distribution systems need to be improved.
"In this regard, it can be said that the modernization and expansion of these networks is an important process, but it also requires time. But since it is necessary to solve this issue as quickly as possible, solutions are already being sought," said the KEVR chairman.
The efficiency of the networks must be increased with different approaches, Ivanov further explained. The first is the temporary accession scheme introduced in Regulation 6, for which, however, opportunities are rapidly running out. The second option is the so-called flexible joining. Here Ivanov gave an example that solar parks produce energy within 1300-1400 hours (out of about 8700 hours per year). During the rest of the time, the requested capacity remains unused. This allows the energy from the wind generators to be joined to make full use of the same capacity, as the overlap between the two energy sources (solar and wind) is only 4%.
According to the chairman of KEVR, visibility of the available transmission capacity of the relevant network must be ensured with a clear indication of the committed and free capacity and of the energy source whose produced energy passes through the relevant section of the network. This will optimize the submission of requests to join the network.
"It is important to develop the digitalization of networks with the introduction of smart metering devices. The deadline for this action is until 2027," Ivan Ivanov also said.
