STATEMENT BY KRIBB AND THE AMERICAN CHAMBER OF COMMERCE ON THE GAS CRISIS

The Confederation of Employers and Industrialists in Bulgaria - KRIB and the American Chamber of Commerce in Bulgaria, in their capacity as representative organizations of Bulgarian, American and international business in the country, express their serious concern over the unprecedented suspension of natural gas supplies to Bulgaria and other neighboring countries. Most of the members of KRIB and the Chamber are suffering significant losses and face long-term problems, with industrial companies clearly the most seriously affected.

The two organizations insist on finding a quick way out of the gas crisis to minimize business losses and prevent the risks of technological accidents. We demand that the government provide continuous, clear, reliable and comprehensive information to businesses and citizens about available natural gas resources, plans for their allocation and the progress of negotiations.

KRIB and the Chamber are in continuous contact with their members to summarize their needs and response options. We encourage our members to document their losses.

The American Chamber of Commerce and KRIB have repeatedly expressed their position for maximum transparency when signing agreements for the supply of natural gas and diversification of sources of energy resources. We call on the government to take pre-emptive action in 2009 to have reliable and effective alternatives in case of possible future energy crises.
